US - South Korea opens Foal Eagle joint exercise
The United States and South Korea began their annual joint military exercises today after postponing them for about a month due to the Winter Olympics.

A joint military exercise between U.S. and South Korean troops is set to go ahead as scheduled today, defense officials said. Nearly 12,000 U.S. troops are expected to participate in Foal Eagle, along with about 300,000 South Korean troops, according toVOA.
The Foal Eagle exercise typically involves ground, naval, air and special forces troops and will last a month. The computer-simulated Key Resolve exercise will be held for two weeks, starting in mid-April. The scale of the exercise will not exceed that of previous years.
The allies usually begin their annual joint military exercises in late February or early March. But this year, they waited until after the PyeongChang Winter Olympics and Paralympics.
The exercise has been shortened to a month and the US does not plan to deploy strategic assets such as aircraft carriers or nuclear submarines. Some observers believe Seoul and Washington are avoiding the showy nature of the exercise amid North Korea's reduced provocations.
