"The United States supports the peaceful resolution of disputes in the East Sea through diplomatic channels, based on international law and common norms, including the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea and the Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the East Sea," US Deputy Secretary of State Antony Blinken said today during a meeting with Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh.
At the meeting, Mr. Minh and Mr. Blinken reviewed the progress in bilateral relations since the establishment of the Comprehensive Partnership in July 2013. At the same time, the two sides agreed to closely coordinate in organizing activities to celebrate the 20th anniversary of diplomatic relations, with the highlight being the official visit to the US by General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong and several other high-level visits in 2015.
Mr. Minh reaffirmed Vietnam's determination towards the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and hoped that the US Congress would soon grant the US President Fast Track Negotiating Authority (TPA) so that the process would proceed smoothly and be completed as scheduled. Mr. Blinken also expressed his hope that the two countries would continue to cooperate actively to complete the negotiations.
Deputy Secretary Blinken said the US State Department will continue to coordinate with Vietnam to effectively implement cooperation in the nine areas stated in the 2013 Joint Statement between the two countries, especially in key areas such as economics - trade - investment, science - technology, education - training and resolving the consequences of war. He affirmed that the US is ready to cooperate with Vietnam in resolving regional and world issues in which the two sides share interests and viewpoints.
