White House spokesman Jay Carney on March 6 reaffirmed America’s position as a Pacific power. The statement was issued just hours after the US Pacific Commander, Admiral Samuel J. Locklear, expressed concern over China’s military buildup and continued assertive actions in the East and South China Seas.

The new Chinese Air Force J-10 fighter jet has just been introduced.

At a regular press conference, when asked about China's defense budget increasing by more than 10%, spokesman Jay Carney did not comment directly but reiterated that the US "is a Pacific power and has significant interests in the region".

Previously, at a hearing in the US Congress, Commander Locklear stated that the growing power of the Chinese military is increasingly causing concern among countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

“China’s focus on building, testing, and fielding new aircraft, ships, weapons, and support systems is raising concerns in the region,” he said.

Commander Locklear pointed out that a series of actions by Beijing in recent years in the waters surrounding China, such as increasing the activities of naval vessels and maritime law enforcement agencies, are aimed at imposing China's maritime sovereignty claims in the East Sea and East China Sea./.
