On the afternoon of November 8, the US Air Force and its allies resumed intense airstrikes to support Kurdish forces in their fight against IS.

After a one-day pause in airstrikes against the self-proclaimed Islamic State (IS) in Syria, yesterday (November 8), the US and its allies in the International Coalition against IS, resumed airstrikes against Islamic State targets in Kobani, a strategic city in northern Syria that has been struggling to withstand IS attacks for more than a month and a half.

On the afternoon of November 8, the US Air Force and its allies resumed intense airstrikes to support the Kurdish militia's efforts to defend the city of Kobane. The airstrikes targeted IS positions east of Kobane, where fierce fighting has been taking place for days between IS and Kurdish fighters. The new series of airstrikes came shortly after Kurdish forces launched several attacks to regain full control of the Al Suna'at district, which is partially controlled by IS fighters.

For their part, on the morning of November 8, IS gunmen launched a fierce artillery attack on the Shair Hill area in the west of Kobane, killing at least two Kurdish gunmen and injuring about 10 others. However, until the night of November 8, the Shair Hill area was still under the control of Kurdish forces.

In addition, on November 8, the US Air Force also bombed and fired missiles at several IS positions on the road south of Aleppo city, also in northern Syria, in order to cut off IS's supply route to Kobani. Initial information confirmed that a number of IS fighters were killed in the airstrikes, but the exact number is unknown.

Analysts say that the airstrikes by the US and its allies have only had limited effects, partly curbing the expansion of IS, but have not been able to eliminate the power of this notorious extremist organization in both Syria and Iraq./.
