America: A text message from a 7-year-old boy saved 15 lives

(Baonghean.vn) - A woman attending a conference in New York City just saved the lives of 15 people thousands of miles away, thanks to a text message from a 7-year-old refugee boy, using the very phone she gave him while volunteering abroad.

Liz Cregg tells the story of little Ahmed's miraculous text message.

Liz Clegg, 50, said that on April 7, she unexpectedly received a text message from a child to whom she had given a phone at a migrant camp in Calais, France, during a volunteer trip in March.

The boy who sent the message was Ahmed, a 7-year-old Afghan boy. The message was riddled with spelling errors, suggesting the sender had to type quickly and in a state of panic. However, Clegg quickly translated the message as:

“I need help. The driver won’t stop. There’s no oxygen in the car. There’s no signal. I’m in a container. I swear to God it’s true.”

Clegg quickly called Tanya Freedman, a member of a London charity that helps refugees. Tanya reported the matter to the police.

The police then called the boy back and asked him briefly to locate the vehicle. The police found the vehicle on the Leicestershire Highway in England. When they entered the truck, they were shocked to find Ahmed and 14 other migrants unconscious from lack of oxygen.

Freedman said she had Ahmed's number and the first thing she did was find a Pashto-speaking interpreter to talk to him. When she called the boy, the police immediately realized it was an emergency.

After rescuing the detainees, police arrested one man for human trafficking and arrested several others involved on suspicion of illegal entry.

As for Ahmed, he is one of dozens of children in the migrant camp “The Jungle”, Calais, France, who are given free phones to contact in case of emergency.
