President Obamais seeking to reach an agreement with the Cuban government on restoring commercial flights between the two countries. |
An unnamed US official said that in addition to wanting to restore commercial flights, the White House is also looking for ways to ease restrictions that the US Congress has imposed on its citizens when they want to visit Cuba.
It is known that the US government only issues visas to its citizens to visit Cuba for family or business reasons. However, the means to visit this island are also very limited. Normally, to get to Cuba, Americans often have to charter private flights at very expensive costs.
Before Mr. Obama's decision, the Wall Street Journal reported that American airlines welcomed the president's decision and were ready to support the restoration of commercial flights to Cuba.
Although the US and Cuba officially restored diplomatic relations on July 20, Obama's decision to ease travel restrictions and end the trade embargo against Cuba will certainly face strong opposition from Congress, where the Republican Party controls both houses and is also the party that firmly opposes normalization with Cuba.
