US State Department Deputy Spokesperson Mark Toner said the US has been informed of North Korea's statements regarding new engine technology for ICBMs. Washington calls on Pyongyang to refrain from actions and statements that could further destabilize the region and focus on taking concrete steps toward fulfilling its international commitments and obligations.
Meanwhile, speaking at an event the same day, Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe warned that North Korea would "pay a heavy price" for its provocative actions despite the international community's reaction.
On April 8, North Korea announced that it had successfully tested an engine designed for an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM). According to the country's leader Kim Jong-Un, Pyongyang can now mount a nuclear warhead on a new type of ICBM and can put any enemy, including the US mainland, within striking range.
Previously, Pyongyang also announced that it had successfully miniaturized and tested a nuclear warhead that could be mounted on a missile. However, experts have expressed skepticism about North Korea's claims.
