Porsche opens the way for electric cars: Discontinuing the 718 Boxster and Cayman gasoline-powered models
Porsche officially discontinued two legendary sports car models, shifting to producing a pure electric version expected to launch in 2026.
The era of gasoline engines is officially over.
Porsche has officially stopped taking orders for all internal combustion engine versions of the 718 Boxster and Cayman globally.

This move marks an important step for the German automaker in its roadmap to electrify its entire product line. Customers who want to own the final versions can now only find cars in stock at the dealer system.
Despite closing the order books, Porsche has not yet announced an official date for when production of the two models will end. Some industry sources have suggested that the assembly line could run until 2026 to fill the backlog of orders.
This gives the last 718 Boxsters and Caymans from the factory a chance to become valuable collector's items in the future.
The electric vehicle roadmap has been announced.
The decision to kill off the petrol-powered models is not a surprise. Porsche has had to stop selling these two models in the European market since early 2024 due to failure to meet new cybersecurity regulations. The carmaker confirmed that upgrading to meet the standards was not economically feasible.

The Boxster and Cayman names aren’t going away entirely. Porsche is actively developing all-electric versions of both models, which are expected to hit the market by 2026. Test prototypes have been spotted testing on the road for the past two years.
According to the leak, customers will be able to choose between a single-motor rear-wheel drive version and a dual-motor all-wheel drive version. Although detailed specifications have not been revealed, the performance of the electric version is expected to far exceed that of its gasoline-powered predecessor.
The biggest challenge for Porsche right now is how to recreate the emotional driving feeling that is the soul of sports cars, something that many fans worry will be difficult to achieve on an electric vehicle platform.
