US decides to extend sanctions on North Korea for another year
US President Barack Obama on June 18 decided to extend sanctions against North Korea for another year, citing the "persistent and extraordinary threat" that Pyongyang poses to US national security, foreign policy and economy.
In a notice to the US Congress, President Obama noted that he had decided to continue to impose a national emergency on North Korea for another year, because "the current situation and risks of proliferation of weapons and fissile material on the Korean Peninsula, as well as the actions and policies of the Government of Pyongyang, continue to pose an extraordinary and imminent threat to the United States."
The national emergency order was first imposed by the US on North Korea in 2008 and expanded in the following years./.
