"The United States is ready to work with any nation, including Russia and Iran, to resolve conflicts," Reuters quoted President Obama as saying on September 28 at the United Nations General Assembly meeting.
"But we have to admit that, after so much bloodshed, so much carnage, we cannot return Syria to the state it was before the war broke out," he said.
"There is no place for destructive fanatics like the Islamic State (IS), and the United States has no compunction about deploying troops to join the coalition against this group," he declared.
In expressing a willingness to work with Iran and Russia, which back Syrian President Assad, Obama openly acknowledged their influence in Syria.
Tehran has armed the Syrian government, and supported Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, who have helped Assad fight rebels. Russia has recently increased its military presence in Syria, where it has a naval base.
Obama will then meet Putin on the sidelines of the meeting, a conversation that could offer some clues about how to end a conflict that has persisted despite years of diplomatic efforts.
