US sides with enemies to overthrow Syrian President

(Baonghean.vn) - Washington has joined forces with its arch-enemy, the international terrorist group al-Qaeda, to pursue its ambition of overthrowing Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. This is the statement of former British Ambassador to Syria, Mr. Peter Ford in an interview with RT news agency.

According to Peter Ford, the US is “effectively working side by side with an al-Qaeda affiliate” in Syria. “We can only hope this is a temporary aberration and they will soon come to their senses.”

Mr Ford was referring to the al-Nusra Front, an al-Qaeda affiliate in Syria. The United Nations, Russia and the United States designate the group as a terrorist organization. However, Washington has demanded that Moscow halt airstrikes on the al-Nusra Front if rebels the US considers moderate are present in the same area.

According to the former British Ambassador to Syria, the above request is completely unreasonable, even “bizarre”. However, it would not be surprising if mentioning Washington's “obsession” with overthrowing Syrian President Assad.

The US strategy for resolving the crisis in Syria has long been consistent with the position that President Assad must relinquish power. Analysts say that Mr. Assad’s departure is likely to create a power vacuum that terrorist groups will exploit to expand their power. After all, al-Nusra fighters and other rebel groups, including Ahrar al-Sham, are trying to establish an Islamic state in the once peaceful country.

Russia has long wanted to add Ahrar al-Sham and Jaysh al-Islam to the United Nations list of terrorist groups. However, this initiative was blocked by the US, despite the fact that these groups frequently carry out attacks against civilians.

In addition, Moscow has asked Washington to persuade US-backed moderate groups in Syria to leave areas where al-Nusra Front operates. Mr. Ford assessed that this request of Russia is legitimate, but so far the US has not accepted it.
