She will be the first woman to be appointed to command a US military combat command.
Speaking at a conference in Washington, Mr. Carter stressed that Ms. Robinson has "deep combat experience" and "good management experience."
In her new role, she will also oversee the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), which ensures aviation security in the United States and Canada. However, Robinson’s appointment to one of the highest positions in the U.S. military still needs Senate approval.
Women are playing an increasingly important role in the US military and now make up about 15% of the country's military.
In 2015, the Pentagon opened all combat positions to women, including special operations units.
In January 2016, another case was General Diana Holland who became the first female commander of the Corps of Cadets at the West Point Military Academy./.
