According to RIA Novosti on June 9, Kevin Hassett, Director of the White House National Economic Council, said that the US will request increased exports of rare earth metals at negotiations with China in London.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said that US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and Trade Representative Jameson Greer will meet the Chinese delegation in London on June 9 to resolve the trade dispute between the two countries.

“The exports of critical minerals are happening in larger volumes than they were before, but not in the quantities that we believe were agreed upon in Geneva. We want rare earth metals, magnets, which are critical for cell phones and everything else, to operate the same way they did before April,” Hassett told CBS News.

In early April 2025, China added 16 US companies to its export control list to control the export of dual goods, according to a document published on the website of the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. The New York Times noted that Beijing has suspended exports of a range of essential minerals and magnets, especially needed for the assembly of cars, UAVs, robots and missiles.

On June 7, China's Ministry of Commerce announced its willingness to strengthen dialogue with other countries on controlling the export of rare earth elements.
