“US air force operations are underway in Syria,” an unnamed US Defense Department official said, without providing details on the number, targets or names of countries conducting airstrikes with the US. Airstrikes in Syria are said to be almost continuous.
According to the OSDH NGO, the new airstrikes targeted an IS command center near al-Mayadin, north of Aleppo province, and oil refineries in Raqa – an IS stronghold located to the east.
The coalition also struck jihadist training camps and bases in the provinces surrounding Raqa. According to OSDH, at least 31 explosions were heard in Raqa and its surroundings. OSDH reported that airstrikes were also carried out in the city of Tabqa, located 50 km west of Raqa. Tabqa is also occupied by IS. At present, OSDH is unable to give an exact number of people killed in the recent airstrikes in Syria.
The Pentagon confirmed that the strikes in Syria destroyed many tanks and positions of the terrorist group IS.
