US refuses to establish no-fly zone in Syria
(Baonghean.vn) - On Monday, December 1, a spokesman for the US executive agency said that the White House still does not support the establishment of a no-fly zone between Syria and Türkiye proposed by the Ankara government.
The spokesman explained that the proposal was not a good solution “at this stage.” The White House statement came after several US media outlets reported that there would be a change in the US stance in the near future, especially after Vice President Joe Biden’s visit to Türkiye.

Türkiye has said it will join the international coalition against IS on the condition that it establishes a buffer zone and a no-fly zone along its Syrian border. The buffer zone would house refugees displaced by the conflict between the Assad regime, rebels and IS jihadists. Ankara has always considered joining the US-led coalition's air strikes in Syria and would consider the threat posed by IS jihadists only if President Bashar Al-Assad's regime collapses.
Unlike the Turks, the Americans continue to fight against IS. In Istanbul, Vice President Joe Biden stressed that “we agree with Türkiye on the need for a political transition in Syria…But right now, our top priority in Iraq and Syria remains defeating IS.” Ankara has so far refused to provide military aid to Kurdish forces defending the border city of Kobane from a siege by IS jihadists.
