AP/Reuters reported that on February 4, the Obama administration announced that it would not return to Cuba the US naval base at Guantanamo Bay as part of an effort to improve relations with Havana.

The above statement was made by Ms. Roberta Jacobson, US Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs, at a hearing before the US House of Representatives, in which this official affirmed that "the Guantanamo issue will not be put on the negotiating table (with the Cuban Government)."

In addition, Ms. Jacobson also emphasized that Washington will continue to sponsor radio and television programs with anti-Cuban Government content.

Last month, President Raul Castro stressed that Cuba's demands in talks toward normalizing diplomatic relations with the United States included the return of the base.

However, it is likely that these issues will not hinder efforts to restore relations between the two sides./.
