Media outlets in South Korea and Japan both believe that North Korea is “highly likely” to launch a missile on April 10.To deal with the threat of attack, Japan deployed PAC-3 missile defenses in Tokyo and surface-to-air missiles across the country on April 9. Japanese authorities have refused to give details about the missile defense system, saying they do not want to panic the public or reveal information to North Korea. Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said he will do whatever it takes to protect the public.
Meanwhile, the commander of US forces in the Pacific, Admiral Samuel Locklear, affirmed that the US can stop North Korean missiles.
Speaking before Congress yesterday, Mr. Locklear said that if North Korea attacks in the coming days, the US will take action, but if North Korea's missiles are not a threat, the US will choose another solution. He emphasized: "I believe that the US has the ability to protect its territory, protect US bases and allies in the region. The US defense system is capable of responding quickly in any location or situation."
In a previous statement, the White House called on North Korea to choose “a peaceful path”. Speaking to the press, White House spokesman Jay Carney said: “North Korea’s warning to foreigners in South Korea to evacuate is a senseless act that only escalates tensions. Such statements will further isolate North Korea from the international community. We hope that the North Korean leader heeds President Obama’s call to choose a peaceful path and act in accordance with international principles.”
Meanwhile, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei stressed: "The situation on the Korean Peninsula is very complex and sensitive. We oppose war and instability right at our doorstep. China calls on all relevant parties to work towards regional peace and stability, and earnestly protect the legitimate rights and safety of the people."
In a related development, in response to information and concerns about the possibility of North Korea conducting a fourth nuclear test, the South Korean Ministry of Defense has denied this information, saying that there are no signs that a nuclear test is about to take place./.
