US: Crazy shooting leaves 3 dead, 3 police officers injured

The gunman, Andrew Michaels, later died in a shootout with North Carolina state police after killing two of his relatives.

On July 30, an angry husband opened fire on his father-in-law's house with two 30-round magazines, killing two people after his wife ran home after an argument.

The man then exchanged gunfire with police and was killed when he was shot by a federal agent, Cumberland County Sheriff Earl "Moose" Butler said.

Mr Butler said the man went crazy and started shooting at everything.

The shooting began just before 7 a.m. local time when Valerie Michaelis, 41, called 911 for help, authorities said. Valerie said her husband Andrew pointed a gun at her after a heated argument.

Investigators said Valerie Michaelis wrestled the gun away from her husband. Andrew then chased her with a knife. She ran to her father's house to try to escape her thug husband.

Seven people were inside the home when Andrew Michaels drove up in his truck and opened fire with a 30-round rifle, killing his father-in-law Gary Simpson, 61, and his 10-year-old nephew Trekwan Covington, authorities said.

The gunman fled in a car, but then returned to the house and opened fire again while still in the car. Police officers arrived at the time of the gunman’s shooting and one officer was shot in the chest, back and shoulder and two other officers suffered minor injuries.

“It was like a battle out there,” said Luz Ross, who lives nearby. “I just heard a bunch of gunshots out there.” Federal agents chased Andrew as he ran into nearby woods and the two sides exchanged gunfire.

The gunman died at the scene, but it is unclear whether he was shot by police or committed suicide. Authorities found 50 to 60 rounds of ammunition in the truck. According to Butler, the man had intended to kill several more people at the time.

The injured police officer's health condition is now stable./.
