2018: Cars sold in the US must have a rearview camera
After years of debate, the US government has just passed a law requiring all cars sold here to be equipped with rearview cameras.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said the law was enacted to limit drivers from backing into pedestrians. According to NHTSA, there are an average of 15,000 accidents each year related to backing errors, resulting in 210 deaths. The US hopes that the new law can help reduce 58-69 cases of human loss of life each year.
Under the new law, all vehicles weighing 4,500 kg or less, including cars, trucks, vans and buses manufactured after 1 May 2018, must be equipped with a rear-view camera system that can observe a minimum space of 3 x 6 m behind the vehicle. In addition, the system must also meet a number of other requirements such as activation time, sensitivity, resolution and durability.
According to NHTSA's calculations, installing a rearview camera system will cost about $43 to $45 for vehicles already equipped with a display screen, and about $132 to $142 for other vehicles. They hope that when the law officially takes effect in 2018, 73% of vehicles in the US will be equipped with this system.
