Nam Dan: Expanding chili growing area for export
(Baonghean)In recent years, implementing the policy of converting crop structure linked to the market, Nam Dan has proactively linked with businesses to develop export goods, including chili.
Coming to Hung Tien this season, people are eagerly preparing for a chili export crop. This is the second year that Mr. Nguyen Van Son from Dong Linh hamlet has grown chili for export. According to Mr. Son, since the end of the 2012 winter-spring crop, following the commune's policy, he converted 165 square meters of corn and peanut land to grow chili for export. To implement the model, he received investment support for 500 chili seedlings. The process of caring for chili is not difficult, but it requires regular watering to keep moist, care for pruning the base branches and leaves, hoeing, and when the chili plants flower, NPK fertilizer must be applied. Chili can be harvested after 75 days of planting, the harvest period lasts 8 months. Since the beginning of the year, he has harvested over 300 quintals of chili fruit and sold it to the company at 13,000 VND/kg. According to calculations from the beginning of the year until now, he has earned 5.7 million VND from selling chili, after deducting costs for labor, seeds, and fertilizer, the net profit is 5 million VND. Mr. Son excitedly said: "Growing chili peppers brings in 10 times more income than growing corn and rice, and there is a company that guarantees the output, so I am assured, my family will soon expand the area."

According to research, chili plants are planted in the household method. The process of planting and caring for chili is monitored and guided by the enterprise staff in each field. Up to now, Xuan Lam hamlet alone has 4 hectares of commercial chili with 40 growing households, Quyet Tien hamlet, Dong Linh also has 1-2 hectares of chili. This winter-spring crop 2012 - 2013, the commune continues to sign a seeding contract with Asia Investment Joint Stock Company to plant 10 hectares of chili, the growing households are lent all seeds, chemicals, and fertilizers by the company.
Mr. Le Van Hop - Head of the Agriculture Department of Hung Tien Commune, excitedly said: In recent years, the commune has developed 8-12 hectares of chili peppers. This year, to expand the chili growing area to Dong Son, Dong Trung, Phuc Chi hamlets..., the commune supports 2 million VND/ha of production, 50% of the price of seeds according to the new rural program, 30% of the price of fertilizer materials. Chili growers are guaranteed to consume at least 2 quintals of chili peppers/1 sao at the price stipulated in the contract, the rest of the farmers can still sell outside at 3 times the price of chili peppers. According to calculations, after 6 months of harvest, farmers earn nearly 160 million VND/ha of chili peppers, many times higher than the income from other crops.
Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhuan - Head of the Agriculture Department of Nam Dan district, emphasized: In order to change the crop structure associated with the goal of building a new rural area, the district is very interested in introducing high-value crops into the structure. This is also a direction to increase the income efficiency for farmers per unit area. Resolution 13 of the 25th District Party Committee emphasized this issue and considered it a new breakthrough in industry and rural areas. In the past two years, the district has created conditions for Hai Hung Joint Stock Company (Hai Duong), Asia Investment and Development Joint Stock Company - North Central branch, Hanoi Agricultural Development Company to provide chili varieties and seeds for people. In particular, the district allows the use of investment capital in building a new rural area to support farmers in purchasing materials and initial equipment to form a raw material area of 5 hectares or more. Many communes have applied the policy of integrating the program of building large-scale fields (15 million VND/field). Up to now, the whole district has developed 45 hectares of commercial chili peppers in Nam Cuong, Khanh Son and over 100 hectares of sweet corn in communes such as Hong Long, Xuan Hoa, Van Dien... Enterprises investing must commit to stable purchasing from the people; if the market price is low, the enterprises still ensure the rights of farmers, and give people advance seeds and pesticides for production.
It is known that, according to the spirit of the Resolution of the 13th Congress of the District Party Committee, by 2016, the entire district will have 60-70% of the production field area achieving an income of 100 million VND or more. In particular, priority will be given to expanding and introducing key agricultural commodity crops such as hot peppers and sweet corn in localities with strengths such as Nam Cuong, Khanh Son, Hung Tien, expanding eggplant cultivation in Nam Anh, stevia in Hung Tien, Van Dien. From there, contributing to creating conditions for many businesses to invest in exploiting the strengths of each region, while ensuring that businesses have the ability to consume.
