Nam Dan: Developing specialized vegetable growing areas

Ms. Nguyen Thi Nhi has officially sold products to restaurants in Vinh City. She revealed: "This year there was a lot of rain, so we planted coriander first, and then harvested kohlrabi. Growing coriander is quick to harvest, and we can earn at least 70,000 VND a day. 10 meters of this vegetable can be harvested 3 times and earn nearly 1 million VND. After deducting nearly 200,000 VND for seeds and NPK fertilizer, our family still has an income of 800,000 VND."

Mr. Nguyen Vinh Phuong, deputy hamlet 6, said: "This year, the season is slow, but people are still determined to close the vegetable growing on this 5.2 hectare field. Households have proactively arranged crop rotation formulas on each type of land according to the intercropping method."

Mr. Nguyen Huu Dung - Chairman of Nam Xuan Commune People's Committee, said: The commune currently has over 500 hectares of agricultural land, of which 150 hectares are specialized in growing vegetables. Up to now, the whole commune has formed 74 hectares of fields with income of over 50 million VND from hamlet 4 to hamlet 8. In 2009, the commune built another high-income field on the 2-rice land in hamlet 6.

To encourage people to promote the movement of production in specialized areas, since 2006, the commune has allocated from the agricultural extension fund to support 30-40 million VND/year for farmers with Thai cucumber seeds, and 1 bag of NPK for households specializing in vegetable cultivation of 3 sao or more. The commune has coordinated with the agricultural service cooperative to let people use electricity for 4 consecutive years to pump water for irrigation of crops in specialized areas without any cost, and has coordinated with the agricultural extension department to invite seed companies in the province to train on soil preparation techniques, planting density as well as how to take care of crops effectively...

Identifying the development of high-income specialized areas as an important direction in building new rural areas, the commune is orienting to build specialized vegetable and high-quality rice areas, reviewing and grouping households and areas with scale to invest and build intra-field canals to ensure irrigation. At the same time, taking advantage of the support fund from the district in the new rural construction program, supporting 250 thousand VND/sao of seeds to focus on developing an additional 30 hectares of high-income specialized fields, mainly jasmine.

Up to now, the whole district has over 228 vegetable fields with a scale of 3 hectares or more, 6,300 hectares with an income of over 50 million VND/ha/year, of which over 400 hectares have reached over 100 million VND/ha/year, typically Nam Anh, Xuan Hoa, Hong Long, Nam Cuong.

According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Nhuan - Head of the Department of Agriculture of Nam Dan district, the production formulas on a high-income field are not stable, the output market and product consumption for people are not guaranteed, only stopping at some enterprises from Hai Duong, Hung Yen, Hai Phong. Therefore, people are not really proactive about the market, so they are not interested in investing in large-scale production, or are afraid to produce.

Faced with this reality, in conjunction with the NTM construction program, Nam Dan district has developed a project to transform crop structure, increase income value by building specialized areas for quality commodities, from now until 2015. Solutions focus on building production plans associated with reasonable crop arrangement and improving efficiency in high-income fields. Focus on mobilizing people to consolidate land plots, forming specialized commodity production areas. Invest in infrastructure serving production on specialized fields in accordance with the planning. Replicating scientific and technological advances in production, especially sweet peppers and sweet corn for export. Using NTM funding to build specialized commodity areas with an investment level of 50 million VND/commune. In particular, strengthening joint ventures and associations in production and product consumption by promoting the formation of specialized agricultural production cooperatives in the area, creating conditions for businesses to approach people.
