He said: “This year my family planted 10 sao of melons. Although it was planted on high alluvial land, my family took care of and watered the melons sufficiently, so the yield was quite good. Compared to last year, it was lower, but each sao still yielded 1.2 - 1.3 tons, traders bought at the field for 3,000 - 5,000 VND/kg, earning 3-4 million VND/sao. This year there was a drought, prices dropped, but compared to other crops such as beans and corn, melons still gave a much higher income.”

Watermelon is a plant with a short growing period, suitable for alluvial soil along the river. Moreover, the summer-autumn crop is the time when it is easy to consume, has a good price, brings high economic value per unit area, and avoids natural disasters such as floods. With these advantages, for many years, Nam Tan commune has chosen watermelon to include in the high-income field structure according to the National target program on new rural construction.
Compared to previous years, this year the melon area has increased by more than 20 hectares, mainly arranged with Phu Dong and Hoan Chau melon varieties. To avoid the situation of mass production and difficulty in consumption, the commune has proactively arranged the production of many different melon varieties. Thanks to the regulation of ensuring irrigation water sources, combined with reasonable fertilization, up to this point, most of the melon area has been harvested with quite high productivity, each hectare of melon can yield 100 million VND.
