This medicinal plant was later identified with the scientific name Dioscorea collettii, and steroid saponin was extracted from the tuber with a fairly high content. (In the following years, in scientific works published in the Journal of Pharmacy in the country and in the former Soviet Union, I named this plant "Nan nghe").

Scientific research proves the effects of the precious medicinal plant Nán nghệ

The issue of drugs to lower blood lipids and cholesterol (due to lipid metabolism disorders) is of concern to the whole world because high blood fat levels are the leading cause of atherosclerosis, high blood pressure, vascular occlusion causing cerebrovascular accidents, strokes, myocardial infarctions....

These drugs were initially synthesized from chemicals, but due to the problem of side effects and the risk of toxicity to the liver and kidneys, scientists later turned to research on drugs of herbal origin.

In the late 70s of the last century, in the former Soviet Union, Diosponin and Polysponin preparations were circulated as lipid-lowering drugs (cholesterol-lowering drugs). The active ingredients of these drugs are water-soluble saponins extracted from Dioscorea caucasica; Dioscorea nipponica are very close plant species, in the same genus as Dioscorea collettii.

In 1985 at the Xetnov Medical University No. 1 - Moscow, the PhD thesis on the plant Nán nghệ and 5 other medicinal plants of the genus Dioscorea in Vietnam was successfully defended.

After returning home, with the collaboration of the late Professor Pham Khue (Geriatrics Institute), Professor, Doctor Nguyen Trung Chinh, doctors at the Vietnam-Soviet Friendship Hospital, Associate Professor, Doctor Hoang Kim Huyen and colleagues at the Hanoi University of Pharmacy.

As a result, the drug Diosgin was born in 1995; from the laboratory scale to clinical research carefully evaluated on patients, it was evaluated as excellent by the research council of Hanoi University of Pharmacy; the project was also honored to win first prize at the national conference on young medical and pharmaceutical sciences.

Using over 500 people with lipid metabolism disorders, biochemical test results on 5 blood lipoprotein indices showed that all blood lipid indices tended to return to normal, especially a strong reduction in low-density lipoprotein (bad fat LDL-c) and a tendency to increase high-density lipoprotein (good fat HDL-c), thereby lowering the CT/HDL ratio (CT-total cholesterol).

In particular, total blood cholesterol in ~100% of patients decreased. The drug also has the effect of lowering blood pressure in most patients with high blood pressure. During treatment, no complications or adverse effects were observed.

Pharmacological research results show that the drug has a strong anti-inflammatory effect, most patients with inflammation and joint swelling were cured after taking the drug. Pharmacological research also shows that the drug has the effect of regulating heart rate.
