(Baonghean) - From 2007 to now, implementing the Project: "Promoting the development of high-income areas and fields", Dien Chau has achieved many positive results; crop yields have increased, production areas have been planned reasonably. Many localities in the district have had successful models of crop restructuring, increasing income for farmers in areas that are not convenient for production...

Dien Tan Commune (Dien Chau) has 334 hectares of agricultural land, including nearly 250 hectares of rice land. In previous years, in the spring crop, people grew rice, peanuts, and corn; in the summer-autumn crop, they grew rice and sesame; in the winter crop, they grew corn and sweet potatoes, of which corn was the main crop with nearly 200 hectares on 2-rice land. Since 2010, farmers have boldly changed the crop structure such as: spring crop production of rice seeds; introduction of new peanut varieties L16, L20 into mass production. In the summer-autumn crop, 20 hectares of low-lying colored land, ineffective sesame cultivation, were converted to green bean cultivation. Or the perennial winter corn varieties with low productivity were replaced by new varieties such as VS36, SP333 and intercropped with waxy corn MX2, MX4, MX10. Especially since the winter crop of 2013, people in hamlet 4 have put into trial cultivation 5 hectares of Dong Anh pumpkin variety, with a yield of 2.5 quintals/sao. According to the 2014 winter crop production plan, the commune continues to expand the pumpkin growing area to 10 hectares in hamlets 4 and 5... Mr. Nguyen Dinh Dung - Vice Chairman of Dien Tan Commune People's Committee said: When the rice plant has reached its peak productivity, people have rotated from rice to other crops, from one crop to another, bringing high income value per unit area...

The alluvial land east of National Highway 1A running along the coast of Dien Chau district is a sandy land, with an area of about 2,300 hectares. However, the biggest difficulty of this area is the source of irrigation water, severe drought in the dry season, local flooding in the rainy season. Farmers produce according to the annual crop structure: spring peanuts, then summer rice, corn, sesame, green beans. With this structure, the average income is only about 35 million VND/ha/year. In that situation, with the motto of the State and people working together, the district has directed the communes in the alluvial area to focus on improving the fields, leveling the ground, building a complete system of ditches, and combining internal traffic.

Nowadays, the coastal areas of Dien Chau district, which were poor and infertile, have been covered with green all year round. In the spring crop, about 1,700 - 1,800 hectares of peanuts were planted with varieties L14, L20... accounting for 80% of the total area, with an average peanut yield of 35 - 36 quintals/ha. The remaining area of 500 - 600 hectares is used to plant vegetables, beans, watermelons, cantaloupes... The summer-autumn crop of sesame and watermelon has only been established in this area for over ten years (previously, after harvesting spring peanuts, people often took advantage of the soil when it was still moist enough to sow the winter-spring rice crop). According to some leaders of the coastal communes, in the summer-autumn crop, there is no crop with a short growing period, low investment but high yield like watermelon, with an average income of 200 - 250 million VND per hectare.

Dien Chau has 13 communes in the color zone with an area of up to nearly 4,000 hectares. In reality, color zone crops bring income many times higher than rice cultivation, but the irrigation system for this important agricultural economic zone still has many limitations. In the rainy season, the fields here are often flooded for 4-5 days, and crops are often completely lost. In the dry season, in April and May, plants often wither and burn. To create a premise for production conversion, the district has invested heavily in building infrastructure on the color land. From 2005 to 2007, the district supported 1 million VND/ha for conversion to pull power lines and build a system of water wells in high-income fields. From 2009 to now, the district has also supported 4 million VND/ha, helping people exploit and fully mobilize irrigation water sources in the fields from drilled wells and open wells to ensure water sources for crops. With many incentive mechanisms, in just the last 5 years, in 13 communes in the color area, there have been 2,300 drilled wells in the fields, 150 km of new canals and over 50 km of power lines to the fields. In the period 2011 - 2015, the district continued to supplement the support mechanism of 5 million VND/1 hectare of conversion to expand high-income fields associated with drilled wells and dug wells to provide irrigation water for the color areas...

To develop agriculture towards high-efficiency commodity, Dien Chau identified the deployment and application of scientific and technological advances as a breakthrough. Vegetable growing areas, livestock, poultry and aquaculture areas were transferred management processes and production techniques according to VietGap standards. Rice growing areas focused on intensive training on intensive farming measures, pest control, rice seed production, and planting new varieties with high yield and good quality rice. Thanks to that, the district has formed 8 large-scale model fields with a scale of 30 - 50 hectares of rice, vegetables and peanuts.

Mr. Hoang Lan - Deputy Head of the Department of Agriculture of Dien Chau district said: "Currently, the district is focusing on synchronously applying scientific and technical advances, focusing on mechanization in production to reduce product costs. Converting crop structures to suit the season and commodity market. Especially, fertilizers and pesticides in the right process create safe, high-quality products, increasing competitiveness in the market." The application of scientific and technical advances has helped Dien Chau increase revenue per unit area. Up to now, nearly 13,000 hectares of agricultural land in the district (9,200 hectares of rice land; 3,500 hectares of colored land) have generated an annual revenue of over 50 million VND/ha; In which, the area with revenue over 200 million VND/ha/year is more than 900ha, revenue over 100 million VND/ha is 7,020ha (accounting for 52%), an increase of 1,080ha compared to 2011.

Despite achieving remarkable results in agricultural production, Dien Chau farmers are always proactive in researching, exploring and creating to have new and highly effective methods. And along with changing farming thinking, the connection between farmers, scientists and businesses will contribute to the sustainable development of Dien Chau agriculture, helping people get rich from farming.
