(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of August 20, the Central Steering Committee for Flood and Storm Prevention and Control and the National Committee for Search and Rescue held an online conference on flood, flash flood and landslide prevention in 2014.

Attending and directing the conference were Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat. At Nghe An bridge, comrade Le Xuan Dai - Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee chaired.

The general report on the response to flash floods and landslides shows that: From 2000 to 2014, in the mountainous provinces of our country, there were 250 consecutive flash floods and landslides affecting residential areas, causing 646 deaths and missing people, 351 injuries, more than 9,700 houses collapsed, more than 100,000 houses flooded and severely damaged, more than 75,000 hectares of rice and crops flooded, hundreds of hectares of cultivated land, irrigation works, and people's lives damaged, with an estimated loss of 3,300 billion VND.

Provinces that frequently experience flash floods and landslides include Lao Cai, Ha Giang, Lai Chau, Son La, Bac Can, Yen Bai, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Kon Tum, Dak Lak... From 2006-2013, the whole country has arranged stable accommodation for about 71,413 households at risk of landslides, flash floods, and flash floods, of which 26,590 households are located in the mountainous areas from the north to Nghe An. The causes of floods and landslides are mainly due to people's lack of awareness about natural disasters, activities of building houses at the foot of streams, forest edges, deforestation, and mineral exploitation.

In Nghe An, as of 2014, there were 1,290 landslides, 268 riverbank erosion, and 55 flash floods. High-risk districts include Tuong Duong, Que Phong, Ky Son, Quy Chau, Quy Hop, Con Cuong, Anh Son, Do Luong, and Thanh Chuong. High-risk landslide areas have been identified by the province, including those in Ky Son, Tuong Duong; Que Phong, Quy Chau, and the Cua Rao-Nam Can-Ky Son area.

At the conference, representatives of the People's Committees of 16 provinces and cities at high risk of landslides and flash floods spoke out clearly about the current situation, causes, and proposed to the Government solutions to prevent natural disasters and ensure safety in areas at risk of landslides and flash floods.

Speaking at the online conference, comrade Le Xuan Dai - Vice Chairman of Nghe An Provincial People's Committee proposed to the Government solutions to ensure safety in landslide and flash flood areas in the area, which are: Supporting capital for projects to relocate areas vulnerable to natural disasters, supporting community disaster prevention equipment, investing in a network of hydrometeorological stations, increasing human resources to monitor flash flood and flash flood prevention programs, supporting investment in communication information to serve propaganda work.

Concluding the conference, Deputy Prime Minister Hoang Trung Hai requested ministries and branches to continue supporting localities to thoroughly and timely implement the evacuation of people from threatened areas, and propose adjustments to mechanisms and policies to support localities in preventing flash floods and landslides. Localities continue to organize the evacuation of people from risky areas, review residential planning, infrastructure planning, zoning, install warning systems, plant forests to prevent waves and erosion, and especially promote public awareness in natural disaster prevention.
