AFP reported that on May 20, NATO Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen expressed concern about the violence in Syria but affirmed that the alliance "has no intention" of taking military action against the Damascus government.

"We strongly condemn the conduct of the Syrian security forces and their repression against the Syrian people and we call on the Syrian leadership to consider the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people... But NATO has no intention of intervening in Syria," Mr. Rasmussen said at a press conference at the NATO summit in Chicago.
