The ancient beauty of Hoang Ta Thon temple in the rice fields

Existing for hundreds of years, Hoang Ta Thon Temple in Long Thanh Commune (Yen Thanh) is an important historical relic worshiping the Great General Hoang Ta Thon in Nghe An.

Hoang Ta Thon (1254 - 1339) was born in Van Phan village, now Dien Van commune (Dien Chau). He was a famous general of the Tran Dynasty who made great contributions in the cause of repelling the Yuan-Mongol invaders in the 13th century. He was once awarded the title of Sat Hai Chang Lai Dai Tuong Quan, and given the title "Minh Tu" to command the navy, guarding 12 seaports. He once chose Thien Bong, now Van Trang village, now Long Thanh commune (Yen Thanh) to establish a farm... Hoang Ta Thon Temple in Long Thanh Commune worships the Great General Hoang Ta Thon, established in ancient times, rebuilt during the Nguyen Dynasty and has been restored and embellished many times. The temple currently has a gate, a gate, a worshiping hall, a main hall, a literary house, a martial arts house... built from many materials: wood, lime, bricks, baked tiles, stone, ceramics, porcelain... On both sides of the worshiping hall, there are two pillars attached to two majestic elephant-horse shaped walls. It is known that after a long period of degradation, in 1992, the descendants of the Hoang family contributed labor and money for a major restoration. The wooden frame of the worshiping hall has a structure of a front-pillar house, a three-arched structure, and a gong stand, typical of the locality. The beams and rafters are beveled. The worshiping house has 4 trusses, the roof trusses are decorated with carvings of flowers, leaves, clouds, water waves... quite gracefully and softly. The inscription is engraved with Chinese characters stating the year of construction: Tu Duc 12th year. The upper hall is a two-room house located vertically. The front of the upper hall is designed like a screen, with three entrances and exits separated by four pillars. On the pillars and the walls are decorated with parallel sentences, "Two dragons facing the moon", phoenixes and four Chinese characters "Sat hai Dai vuong". Photo: Huy Thu

The wooden frame of the upper hall is made of ironwood, the structure of the roof truss is in the style of a gong stand. The upper hall of Hoang Ta Thon temple most concentratedly shows the beauty of wood carvings of the relic, showing familiar themes such as dragons, phoenixes, tiger faces... Above and below, the main rafters are carved with the image of "two dragons facing the moon" with 2 dragon heads opening their mouths, sharp and large. After many renovations and restorations, the temple still retains its ancient architecture. The temple still preserves many valuable ancient artifacts, such as incense tables, incense tubes, dragon thrones, dragon palanquins, wooden swords, etc. The temple has been recognized as a National Historical - Cultural Relic. This is not only a place for spiritual and cultural activities, demonstrating the tradition of drinking water and remembering its source of the local people, but also an important destination for sightseeing, learning, and research about the Great General of the Sea Hoang Ta Thon in Nghe An.
