Yesterday evening, September 12, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien visited two patients at Viet Duc Hospital who received heart and liver transplants from organs transported from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi by air.

Currently, both transplant patients are in stable health, eating well and all test results are normal. Mr. Nguyen Van H (40 years old, in Hanoi) - who just received a heart transplant from a brain-dead donor in Ho Chi Minh City was able to actively sit up to receive the working delegation of the Ministry of Health led by Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien who visited and gave gifts at his hospital bed.

Clearly answering each question from Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien, Deputy Minister Nguyen Thi Xuyen and the doctors, Mr. H. said he was able to eat and drink by himself and felt his health improving day by day.

Also having good progress in health condition, patient Tran Ngoc H. (59 years old, Hanoi) expressed his gratitude to the doctors, he called them the people who saved his life, gave him a new life. Receiving the gift from the Minister of Health, two patients Tran Ngoc H. and Nguyen Van H. were both moved to share that they were truly very lucky people.

Previously, on the morning of September 5, patients Tran Ngoc H. and Nguyen Van H. were two of thousands of patients waiting for organ transplants who were lucky enough to receive livers and hearts from brain-dead donors at Cho Ray Hospital (Ho Chi Minh City) with suitable indicators. What was special was that this heart and liver were transported more than 1,700 km from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi by air on the evening of September 4 to perform these two organ transplants.

Congratulating the doctors and nurses of Viet Duc Hospital on successfully performing a heart and liver transplant, Minister of Health Nguyen Thi Kim Tien highly appreciated the coordination of the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation and acknowledged the efforts of Cho Ray Hospital in resuscitation to maintain the organs of brain-dead patients.

Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said that next October, the Ministry of Health will meet with hospitals to develop a registration and coordination process for organ donation. The Minister requested that the National Coordination Center coordinate with the Organ and Tissue Donation Campaign Association to further disseminate information to the public so that everyone understands the noble meaning of organ donation. Widely publicize phone numbers, organ donation standards and issue organ donation registration cards to the public.

In addition, update the list of people waiting for transplants and people registering to donate organs using computer software; build a price frame for each type of organ transplant in the direction of calculating correctly and fully the costs to request the Vietnam Social Security to pay and have measures to support the poor with humanitarian funds.

For Viet Duc Hospital, the Minister requested to prepare a scientific project on organ preservation and actively research to move towards lung and pancreas transplants.

Speaking with the leaders of the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation and Viet Duc Hospital, Minister Nguyen Thi Kim Tien said that in the coming time, when there are many organ donors, the health sector will equip specialized vehicles to transport organs, and even move towards equipping helicopters.

According to the National Coordination Center for Human Organ Transplantation, currently, in developed countries, 90% of organs for transplants are taken from brain-dead people. Meanwhile, in recent years, there have been only a few dozen cases of brain-dead people in Vietnam donating organs.
