New York declares state of emergency

The most powerful snowstorm in U.S. history hit the northern United States on Monday night and into Tuesday morning. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the snowfall on Monday will be 5 to 10 centimeters (2 to 4 inches) thick, especially in Boston and New York. In these two cities, the snowfall could be as high as 45 to 60 centimeters (18 to 24 inches), and even as high as 80 centimeters (32 inches) in eastern Massachusetts. Before the storm hit, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned on Sunday that the upcoming snowstorm was “a significant event in the history of this city.” At the same time, Mr. Blasio urged people to stay off the streets while the storm hit and “prepare for the worst ever.”
