New York declares state of emergency
(Baonghean.vn) - The entire United States is gearing up to prepare for one of the strongest snowstorms in history. On Monday, January 26, just a few hours after the snowstorm hit the north of the country, Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for 13 counties in New York state.
The most powerful snowstorm in U.S. history hit the northern United States on Monday night and into Tuesday morning. According to the National Weather Service (NWS), the snowfall on Monday will be 5 to 10 centimeters (2 to 4 inches) thick, especially in Boston and New York. In these two cities, the snowfall could be as high as 45 to 60 centimeters (18 to 24 inches), and even as high as 80 centimeters (32 inches) in eastern Massachusetts. The forecast also said the snowstorm would extend all the way to the Canadian border.

According to authorities, the storm caused more than 2,000 flights to be canceled nationwide. On Monday morning alone, the snowstorm's circulation caused 271 flights to be delayed.
Before the storm hit, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio warned on Sunday that the upcoming snowstorm was “a significant event in the history of this city.” At the same time, Mr. Blasio urged people to stay off the streets while the storm hit and “prepare for the worst ever.”
In response to the announcements from authorities, New Yorkers rushed to supermarkets on Sunday evening to stock up on food for the coming days. On Sundays, people often lined up to stock up on supplies across the United States.
About 50 million people in the northeastern United States could be affected by the storm, according to authorities. In Boston, Mayor Martin Walsh urged people to also look out for their vulnerable neighbors.
“White House staff have been in contact with local officials in cities along the coast to ensure they have the resources to prepare and respond immediately to the storm,” a government spokesman said at a press conference in New Delhi. President Obama is on a three-day visit to New Delhi.
