In the General Staff program of the RSN TV channel, the head of the Russian Navy's Shipbuilding Department, Lieutenant Colonel Vladimir Triapichnikov, said on January 16 that Russia's new aircraft carrier will use a nuclear reactor and is expected to be built and put into service in 2030.

"By the end of 2030, I hope such a ship will be commissioned into the Navy," Triapichnikov said.
Aircraft carriers are tasked with ensuring combat stability for warships and submarines of the Russian Navy, first of all strategic missile carriers.
According to Mr. Triapichnikov, the aircraft carrier "in current conditions needs to be equipped with a special power unit." However, Mr. Triapichnikov did not say what the tonnage of this future aircraft carrier will be.
"It could be a light aircraft carrier, but on the basis of the future destroyer Leader or with a larger tonnage," he said.
Currently, the Russian Navy only possesses one aircraft carrier, the heavy cruiser Admiral of the Soviet Fleet Kuznetsov.
