That was the assertion of Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich at a press conference on May 15.

On May 15, Russia said it had not received an official request from the leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Lugansk People's Republics to join the territory of the Russian Federation.

Speaking at a press conference, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said that although the media has reported a lot of information on this issue, up to now, Russia has not received an official request.

Responding to a reporter’s question about Russia’s stance after the two eastern regions held referendums on independence, Mr. Lukashevich emphasized: “This is not a question of who recognizes whom. The main goal at this time is to avoid threats of pushing Ukraine into a civil war. If the Ukrainian government’s anti-terrorist campaign causes more deaths and affects the lives of more people, then the people have the right to take measures to ensure their rights.”

Following the referendums in Donetsk and Lugansk on May 11, the leaders of the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic announced that they would ask Russia to consider annexing their territory. Meanwhile, in the self-proclaimed Lugansk People's Republic, some officials said that a second vote on annexation to Russia may be held.

In a move to soon find a solution to the current domestic political crisis and stabilize the situation in the eastern provinces supporting federalization, acting President of Ukraine Oleksandr Turchynov announced on May 14 that Kiev is ready for dialogue with relevant parties./.
