Russia proposes program to deal with threats from space
According to a statement on February 20 by the Secretary of the Russian Security Council (SBR), Mr. Nikolai Patrushev confirmed that Moscow has proposed drafting an international program to deal with threats from space.
Mr. Patrushev assessed that the risk of meteorites and space debris to Earth is global and has been closely monitored by international public opinion and the United Nations for decades.

The explosion that caused a meteor shower in the sky over many southern provinces of Russia, first in Chelyabin province on the morning of February 15, has sounded the alarm bell for the whole world about this potentially destructive danger.
The SBR has repeatedly proposed to draft and implement a transnational program aimed at dealing with space risks related to the possibility of meteorites and space debris colliding with or hitting the Earth, and to draft international legal documents to contribute to solving the task of dealing with dangerous objects from space.
To carry out this task, a joint effort and coordinated action by countries capable of observing and analyzing the state of our near-Earth space is needed.
To date, scientists around the world have discovered more than 8,500 meteorites that are potentially dangerous to Earth.
They also determined that when colliding with Earth, a meteorite with a diameter of hundreds of meters has the ability to destroy a large area on Earth, but a meteorite with a diameter of 800-1,000 meters or more, if hitting Earth, can cause a global ecological disaster.
Large asteroids and other planets flying at speeds of tens of kilometers per second can pose a risk of destruction when hitting Earth./.
