Russia brings weapons more powerful than S-300 closer to North Korea

June 15, 2017 07:16

According to Sputnik on June 14, Russia decided to equip the Buk-M3 air defense system to Vladivostok in the Far East, less than 20km from North Korea.

Stronger than S-300

The Russian Defense Ministry said that the Far East and Siberia are the first two regions where Russia will be equipped with this new generation of advanced air defense systems. This deployment is aimed at countering the threats from air targets caused by instability on the Korean Peninsula, Sputnik quoted a Russian military source as saying.

The purpose of deploying the Buk-M3 is quite clear and Russia further emphasized that this weapon is simply an air defense system and certainly will not cause any neighboring countries to protest because it cannot affect the regional balance of power.

As a completely new weapon system, there is not much information about the Buk-M3. In the little information revealed by the Russian Ministry of Defense about the Buk-M3, the ministry affirmed that the Buk-M3 system is powerful and has a much higher probability of destroying targets than the S-300.

The 9M317M missile of the Buk-M3 system is capable of destroying targets flying at a maximum speed of 3,000m/s, at a distance of 2.5-70km, at an altitude of 15m to 35km, and the announced probability of destroying the target is 99%, much higher than the current S-300 missile complex.

Gather weapons

Before Russia decided to deploy Buk-M3 to the Far East, Vladivostok was unexpectedly the place where Russia gathered a large number of weapons. To prove the authenticity of the information, Daily Star posted a video recording images of a convoy including tanks and anti-aircraft missiles moving in this city.

Before this information, the Russian side did not make any official statement about this accusation. However, TASS quoted a Russian military source saying that the country had just deployed the first systems of the Pantsir-S2 missile artillery system version here.

According to this source, a battalion equipped with Pantsir-S2 air defense missile/gun systems has been merged into the Vladivostok Defense Air Defense Missile Regiment.

"Pantsir-S2 air defense complexes are taking on the task of protecting the main base of the Russian Navy's Pacific Fleet. The regiment in Vladivostok will receive the latest S-400 missile system. Crews are undergoing training to switch to the new system," said Far Eastern Military District spokesman Roman Martov.

In addition to the above weapons, also according to TASS, at the end of 2016, Russia suddenly deployed Iskander-M ballistic missiles to Ussuri - an area close to the Chinese border and not too far from North Korea.

Information about the presence of Iskander-M ballistic missiles in Ussuri only became known when TASS news agency published a series of photos about the combat deployment exercise of the Russian Strategic Missile Forces with Iskander-M in the Ussuri region.

It is known that these weapons all belong to the Eastern Military District of the Russian army - a military district established in 2010 including the territory of the former Far Eastern Military District and part of the former Siberian Military District. The headquarters of the Eastern Military District is located in Khabarovsk, very close to the border with China.
