Russia: Dozens of flights delayed due to snow
Snowfall makes traffic in Moscow and surrounding areas especially difficult.
Unusual weather conditions caused snow and rain to fall continuously all day on April 9 in Moscow and its suburbs, with a level equal to one-third of the snowfall for the entire month of April.
Damadevo Airport was forced to postpone about 70 flights on the morning of April 9 due to heavy snowfall. Several airports in the capital also had to change the take-off and landing times of many flights.
Snow and strong winds also knocked down about 500 trees and many lamp posts in the city. Meanwhile, 70 villages with about 3,000 people living in the southern and eastern suburbs of Moscow were without electricity due to heavy snowfall and strong winds.
The Moscow Region Emergency Situations Service said that although the power system in many residential areas was restored at the end of April 9, it does not rule out the possibility that today (April 10), there will still be problems with the power supply and transmission system in the suburbs of Moscow due to bad weather and continued snowfall.
According to the forecast of the Russian Hydrometeorological Service, snow will continue to fall until next Tuesday, but with decreasing intensity. The authorities have advised people to stay off the roads and limit the use of personal vehicles during these days.
