(Baonghean.vn) - Russia is no longer the weak country it was in the 1990s when the US expanded NATO, former advisor to George W. Bush, Yale University Professor Thomas Graham wrote in an article for National Interest magazine.

The author of the article argues that Washington can no longer ignore Moscow's interests in the context of Russia's growing influence on the international arena.

“The reality that those who oppose a compromise with Moscow cannot ignore is that Russia is no longer the weak country it was in the 1990s when the US began to expand NATO. Today, its modernized army is the strongest in Europe, which means that it cannot ignore Russian interests, as it once did,” Mr. Graham expressed his opinion.

In particular, the former advisor to President Bush called on the US to make concessions to Russia and impose a temporary suspension on the admission of new members to the North Atlantic Alliance, including Ukraine.

“This decision will be condemned as cowardice by those who still harbor illusions about a ‘unipolar world’, assert Russia’s weakness, accuse it of threatening or imply unbreakable international norms, which are supposedly inviolable – regardless of the fact that the United States has violated some of them over the past 20 years,” the expert concluded.

Relations between Russia and the West have become increasingly tense in recent months. Washington and Brussels accuse Moscow of preparing to “invade” Ukraine and of boosting its presence in Eastern Europe. Moscow denies the claims, insisting that it is moving troops within its own territory and that this is nothing to worry about.
