Russia celebrates Victory Day over fascism on May 9

Yesterday, one day before the 66th anniversary of Victory Day (May 9, 1945), Russian leaders including President Dmitry Medvedev, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, Senate Chairman Sergei Mirnov, House of Representatives Chairman Boris Gryzlov..., many officials and veterans laid flowers at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Moscow.

On the same day, Mr. Medvedev also met with a number of people who participated in the Great Patriotic War, attended the opening ceremony of the Victory Flag Gallery at the Central Museum of the Russian Armed Forces in Moscow, and sent congratulatory messages to the heads of state and people of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS).

Today, Russia celebrates the 66th anniversary of the victory over Nazi Germany, ending World War II. Russia spent about 102 million rubles ($3.7 million) to prepare for the Victory Day parade.

* On May 7, security and internal affairs officers of Astrakhal province (Russia) eliminated a member of a religious extremist group in the province when he attempted to detonate a bomb near the headquarters of the Astrakhal Interior Ministry's field unit. Police arrested other members, seized many weapons and documents related to the plan to terrorize law enforcement agencies during the Victory Day celebrations.
