Russia says US using financial leverage to sabotage UN work
(Baonghean.vn) - Washington is trying to hinder the work of the United Nations not only by creating visa obstacles for members of delegations but also by ignoring its commitments to contribute to the organization's budget. This was criticized by the Russian Foreign Ministry in a statement released on October 13.

“It should be noted that the United States has been a party that has not paid for quite a long time. Its debt to the UN regular budget has exceeded $1 billion. Washington’s clear attempts to sabotage the work of this organization are evident: along with its unpredictable and unequal policy of granting visas to members of delegations to the United States, it is also using financial leverage,” the ministry said.
This situation has forced the UN Secretariat to resort to austerity measures. For example, from mid-October 2019, the UN Security Council and the General Assembly will hold only two meetings a day, from 10am to 1pm and from 3pm to 6pm, whereas previously diplomats usually held meetings in the evening and late at night.
In addition, the volume of documents translated into the six official languages of the United Nations will be limited. The United Nations will reduce spending on electricity, air conditioning and security services.
Moscow stressed the importance of UN member states paying their contributions to the UN budget on time to ensure the normal functioning of the organization. “Russia, in turn, is one of the countries that actually contributes financially. Russia fulfills all its financial obligations on time by paying all its contributions,” the Russian Foreign Ministry said.
Earlier, on October 8, UN Secretary-General Antonio Gutteres warned member states that the US was facing a serious financial crisis and called on members to pay their annual dues.
