Russia: Organizing international conference on East Sea security

According to VNA correspondent in the Russian Federation, on October 18, in Moscow, the Institute of Oriental Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences held the first international scientific conference on security and cooperation in the East Sea.

Attending the conference, on the Russian side, there were Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council (Senate) Mikhail Margelov, Corresponding Academician Vytali Naumkin - Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies, representatives of the State Duma (Lower House), the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Security and Defense Council, leaders of a number of research institutes and many experts and scientists interested in the East Sea issue. On the international guest side, there were leading scholars and researchers of military, politics and maritime law from the European Union, Australia, India, the United States, Japan, etc.

Speaking at the opening session of the workshop, Director of the Foreign Planning Department of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alekxandr Tokovinin said that Russia supports the search for mutually acceptable solutions to resolve disputes in the East Sea; calls on the disputing parties to exercise restraint, not to use force and to resolve the issue by political-diplomatic measures, based on international law and the 1982 Convention on the Law of the Sea.

In a press release, the leader of the Institute of Oriental Studies said that the East Sea issue is one of the topics attracting great attention from international public opinion. Countries in the disputed area have been negotiating for a long time, but have not yet found a feasible solution to resolve disagreements related to territorial sovereignty disputes, fishing rights, oil and gas exploration and exploitation, and freedom of navigation.

The Institute of Oriental Studies decided to organize an international scientific conference on security and cooperation in the East Sea to create a forum for politicians, scholars and international research experts to give multi-dimensional assessments of the East Sea issue from a geopolitical perspective, the risk of instability and arms race in the region, the legal and historical aspects of disputes in the East Sea, and the ability to resolve current issues with the hope that the presentations at the conference will contribute to helping the countries in dispute soon find a peaceful, sustainable and mutually beneficial solution to the conflict.

The Institute of Oriental Studies also said that to ensure the objectivity of the presentations, the institute has a policy of not inviting scholars and researchers from countries with disputes in the East Sea./.
