The European Union (EU) sanctions against Russia are a completely hostile policy towards Russia, which runs counter to the EU's own interests, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevic said on September 11.

Mr. Lukashevic pointed out that Russian leaders at all levels have clearly stated that they will apply appropriate measures equivalent to those of the EU.

The Russian diplomat also affirmed that Moscow strongly opposes the sanctions the US plans to impose on Russia, considering this a violation of international law because only the Security Council has the authority to impose sanctions.

On the other hand, spokesman Lukashevic stressed that sanctions cause great economic damage to countries and Russia will also respond to these hostile measures.

EU diplomatic sources said the new economic sanctions against Russia will take effect from September 12, increasing restrictions on Russian companies and banks' access to European capital markets, limiting some high-tech exports to Russia, freezing assets and banning travel for some Russian officials.

However, EU diplomats said the sanctions would be lifted if the situation in eastern Ukraine improved.

Regarding the situation in Ukraine, Mr. Lukashevic denied the information that Russian soldiers were present in Eastern Ukraine. He affirmed that there were no Russian soldiers in Eastern Ukraine, but only volunteer forces fighting against the repression of people in the two provinces of Lugansk and Donetsk./.
