Russia and Argentina sign energy cooperation agreement

President Putin visited Argentina to strengthen economic and trade relations and promote Russia's influence in Latin America.

On July 12, Russia signed an energy cooperation agreement with Argentina. Speaking to reporters in the Argentine capital Buenos Aires, Russian President Putin said that Russia's state nuclear energy corporation Rosatom had offered to take on a contract to build two new nuclear power plants in Argentina.

“Russia has advanced technology with nuclear centers that operate economically, meet environmental and security requirements. We have signed an agreement on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. We hope to create a solid basis for cooperation between our countries in this field,” said President Putin.

For his part, Argentine President Fernandez said the Russian delegation will visit the Vaca Muerta shale gas field (in southern Argentina). Vaca Muerta is considered one of the largest shale gas fields in the Western Hemisphere and could double Argentina's energy production in the next 10 years./.
