Russia confirmed on January 2 that more than 60 of its soldiers were killed in a Ukrainian missile attack on a temporary housing complex used by Russian forces in the Donbass region.

Earlier, the Russian Defense Ministry said that the base in the city of Makeyevka in the self-proclaimed Donetsk People's Republic was attacked by Ukraine with 6 missiles launched from the US-supplied HIMARS high-mobility rocket artillery system. The Russian air defense system intercepted 2 missiles but 4 other missiles hit the target.

“As a result of an attack by four missiles with high-explosive warheads on a temporary deployment base, 63 Russian servicemen were killed,” said Russian Defense Ministry spokesman General Igor Konashenkov. The ministry pledged to provide necessary assistance to the families of the dead soldiers.

According to Daniil Bezsonov, an official of the Donetsk People's Republic, the missiles targeted the building of a vocational school where the army was stationed.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has previously condemned Washington for not only supplying sophisticated weapons to Kiev but also providing the Ukrainian military with intelligence on the locations of Russian forces.
