They are students and alumni of colleges and universities in Da Nang. Thanks to this blood “bank”, many patients have been saved and many sick children have survived.

Hau's last Tet

Share and grow
Hand in hand is also a forum for students to share their difficulties in life, helping them to be more steadfast. Member Van Thi Huyen shared: “From a shy person, living a boring, bland life, relying on others like a turtle hiding its head in its shell, participating in group activities, I have received and gained many more meaningful things. Just give and you will receive a lot in return.”

The day before Tet, by chance, a member of Hand in Hand went online and read an urgent appeal: “Donate blood for Hau to have his last Tet”. That child is Hoang Trung Hau (10 years old) who has terminal cancer.

Hau's mother, Hoang Thi Thanh Luong, choked up: "Every night, Hau has to take two sleeping pills because the pain is too much to sleep. Now she needs blood to live one day at a time. Maybe she can last until the 25th of Tet or if she's lucky, she can celebrate her last Tet on earth..."

The next day, 12 members of Hand in Hand went to room 1003 (Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Center). That day was not Hau's scheduled blood transfusion, so the group offered to donate blood into a reserve bag for Hau.

But to sustain Hau's life, blood had to be transfused continuously, not just a few times. So Phan Nhu Son, then Nguyen Thi Thanh Tuyen, Quy, Thuong, Le (all members) were on duty at the hospital bed to transfuse blood for the boy.

“The day we came to give blood, Hau was in pain so he kept covering his face with his hands. The next day, when we came back, Hau was happier. The group members joked: Maybe our blood transfused into Hau made him happier,” Tuan confided.

Mrs. Luong shared that the family has two mothers and children, since Hau got cancer, the family has only relied on the tolerance and support from kind hearts. Even the fact that the Hand in Hand group came to donate blood to help Hau surprised her. Not only giving blood, after receiving the 130,000 VND compensation for blood donation, the group members asked to give it to Hau so that he could buy more sugar and milk.

“Thanks to the children in the Hand in Hand group, Hau was happier, stayed on earth for many more days, and the two of us were able to celebrate our last Tet together,” Mrs. Luong said with tears in her eyes. And on the third day of Tet, Hau passed away, and she was able to see her last Tet. During those days, the members of Hand in Hand were always by Hau’s bedside.

Currently, the Hand in Hand group is preparing to donate blood to baby Duong - a cancer patient at the Danang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Center. And other children in need will receive help from this living blood "bank".

From the hands

Hand in hand was founded by students in 2006 and until now many of them have graduated and got married but the group still maintains its activities. The next generations of students from Pedagogical University, Polytechnic University, Foreign Language University, Vietnam - Korea University... follow in the footsteps of their predecessors to spread love to many unfortunate lives.

Six years after its establishment, the group’s members have “inserted” into most of Da Nang’s colleges and universities, with a number of up to hundreds of members. Not only a blood “bank”, the group also carries out many other charity and social programs.

Thanh Nhan - deputy team leader - said that every night the members go to Nguyen Dinh Chieu Special School to teach the children; organize entertainment activities, give gifts to Agent Orange children, visit and give gifts to children in Quang Tri, Da Nang, Phu Yen, Hue provinces..., organize Green Summer volunteer activities in mountainous areas of the Central region, donate to help flood victims...

To fund operations, group members collect scrap metal and paper from dormitories and residential areas, or organize movie nights and art shows at schools to raise funds.

Two beautiful stories

Not long ago, member Nguyen The Vuot had just finished his morning class at the Da Nang University of Education when he received an urgent call to donate blood at Hue Central Hospital to save a woman. Vuot immediately took a bus to Hue to donate blood. He arrived in Hue at 1 pm, but could not donate blood because the patient was still under treatment.

“We were hungry but we didn’t dare to go out to eat because we were afraid that if we ate, we wouldn’t be able to get blood drawn. So we sat and waited,” Vuot said. At 2 o’clock, Vuot went into the room to donate blood to a strange woman. Then he got in the car and went to Da Nang to prepare for class tomorrow...

Thanh Nhan (a student at Da Nang University of Education) also bravely stayed at Da Nang Hospital to give blood to a pregnant woman who was sick during her pregnancy. “I just think that my blood can help someone’s life, that’s enough to make me happy,” Nhan said simply.
