Mr. Le Ke Son, Deputy Director General of the General Department of Environment (Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment) said that with a coastline of 3,260km and more than 50% of the country's population living in low-lying areas, Vietnam is considered one of the countries most vulnerable and negatively affected by climate change and rising sea levels.

“Therefore, this year's World Environment Day is an opportunity to encourage people to pay more attention to the environmental impacts from the smallest actions to limit environmental impacts,” Mr. Son emphasized.

With the theme "Take action to prevent rising sea levels," World Environment Day 2014 also aims to emphasize the role and importance of environmental protection and climate change response for vulnerable areas such as islands and coastal areas.

The theme of World Environment Day 2014 contains many practical meanings related to the state management work of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment such as: environmental protection; integrated management of seas and islands; response to climate change.

Accordingly, the World Environment Day 2014 event will have innovations in methods and forms of organization. In addition to communication activities nationwide, Ho Chi Minh City - the host city - will organize key activities before and on June 5.

On June 5, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Natural Resources and Environment will organize a series of activities such as garbage collection, environmental cleaning, tree planting, and environmental improvement throughout the city. The national rally in response to World Environment Day will be held on the evening of June 4.

In addition, the Gala Program with the theme “For a Green Future” will also be broadcast live with special performances. At this Gala, there will be an Award Ceremony for the 2013 National Environmental Film Festival, video clips, environmental songs performed by famous ambassadors and singers.

On this occasion, Vietnam Television also produced promotional trailers; a 30-minute television political discussion program; and a 60-minute talk show about World Environment Day 2014.
