Barns that have been soaked in water for a long time are easily contaminated, and the risk of disease outbreaks in livestock is very high. Therefore, it is necessary to have solutions to prevent and control diseases early, especially when the herd is restored for Tet.

The risk of an outbreak is present.

Mon Son Commune was severely flooded during the recent flood, and also had the largest number of dead and swept away poultry in Con Cuong District, with nearly 1,200 birds. The risk of avian influenza outbreaks is present because the rain continues after the water recedes, and the humid environment is a favorable condition for viruses to thrive.

Mr. Luong Van Hoa - Chairman of Mon Son Commune People's Committee said: The recent flood caused high water levels, isolating villages for many days, including 1,180 poultry belonging to people in Thai Son 2, Nam Son, and Cua Rao villages that died and were swept away. People suffered economic losses and have not dared to restock their flocks yet because the water has not receded for long, the farming environment has not recovered, and the risk of disease outbreaks remains high.

According to the Con Cuong District Agricultural Service Center, immediately after the water receded, the unit received disinfectants and sterilizers to distribute to communes, prioritizing localities that have been flooded for a long time with a quantity of 2,000 liters. At the same time, veterinary staff were sent to guide people in cleaning up and ensuring the environment after the flood. However, with a total herd of more than 34,000 cattle and 80,000 poultry, and small-scale farming in communes, villages, and hamlets, disease control after the flood is still difficult, especially with dangerous diseases such as lumpy skin disease, African swine fever, avian influenza, etc.

Anh Son district is also a locality that was deeply flooded for many days during the recent flood, concentrated in the communes of Hung Son, Duc Son, Phuc Son, Tuong Son... After the water receded, in addition to stabilizing life and activities, protecting livestock from epidemics is also a top priority for localities.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Son - Director of the District Agricultural Service Center said: Anh Son is a district with a fairly large livestock herd in the province, with a total herd of about 30,000 buffaloes and cows, a total herd of nearly 60,000 pigs, and a total herd of more than 1 million poultry. Therefore, the unit has proactively implemented disease prevention and control after floods as soon as the water recedes with many synchronous solutions. The unit's veterinary officers have stepped up propaganda and gone to communes to instruct people on how to disinfect and sterilize barns according to regulations.

In addition, communes and households have also proactively purchased lime powder to spread around the farming area to prevent the virus from entering. The district is also focusing on vaccination for the autumn crop, creating a protective layer for livestock after floods. However, the current difficulty is that African swine fever is still appearing in Khai Son and Phuc Son communes... and in humid and rainy environments, it can re-emerge in neighboring localities.

Increase vaccination rates for pets

According to the report of the Provincial Steering Committee for Natural Disaster Prevention, Search and Rescue and Civil Defense, the recent heavy rains accompanied by the circulation of storm No. 4 have caused many losses in human lives and property in Nghe An province. Particularly in the livestock sector, 17,464 poultry and 76 cattle were killed and swept away, concentrated in the localities of Con Cuong, Do Luong, Dien Chau, Anh Son, Vinh City... causing significant losses to the people.

Mr. Dang Van Minh - Head of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine said: During the rainy season, especially after floods, livestock areas are often affected and polluted. The humid environment is very suitable for pathogens to appear. In livestock, there are often diseases such as foot and mouth disease, lumpy skin disease, African swine fever, and septicemia. For poultry, there are diseases related to the respiratory tract such as avian influenza. Therefore, local authorities and livestock farmers must not be subjective during this sensitive period.

Currently, the province has also provided 15,000 liters of chemicals to distribute to districts to proactively disinfect and sterilize after the recent floods. One of the important solutions is to increase the vaccination rate for livestock to create a protective layer, covering at least 80% of the total herd to be able to resist all kinds of diseases. Currently, the autumn vaccination season (September 15 - October 15) is in progress, so localities and livestock farmers need to focus on implementing and completing this requirement well.

Mr. Dang Van Minh - Head of the Provincial Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine

Previously, the Provincial People's Committee issued Official Dispatch No. 7746/UBND-NN requesting the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development; People's Committees of districts, cities and towns to deploy disease prevention and control for livestock after rain and floods according to the instructions of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development.

Accordingly, local departments, branches, sectors and relevant units organize general cleaning, disinfection and sterilization immediately after the end of the rain and flood to destroy pathogens in the environment. Instruct livestock farmers to regularly clean livestock areas and livestock equipment; collect and treat livestock waste to avoid polluting the environment. In case of herd restoration, it is necessary to choose breeds with clear origin, healthy and fully vaccinated...
