People travel across the degraded suspension bridge.
Pha Lai suspension bridge is 214m long, 2.1m wide, and has a load capacity of 2.5 tons. It was put into use in 2013 with a total investment of 8.7 billion VND. |
After nearly 6 years of use, the suspension bridge is deteriorating and damaged in many areas. |
The wooden floor boards are broken and rotten in many places, the floor covering is peeling and shifting. |
The iron belts popped out and sprung up like dangerous traps for people and livestock crossing the bridge. |
The horizontal beams, longitudinal beams, brackets, and cable piles were peeling and rusting, and the bridge railings were broken in many places. In particular, the foundation of the left bank gate pillar was deeply eroded by water, exposing the bored piles. |
As the only bridge connecting 5 villages across the river to the center of Mon Son commune, Pha Lai suspension bridge is degraded, making it difficult for people to travel, especially making it impossible to use motor vehicles to transport goods for production and harvesting agricultural products. |
With a series of previously degraded and damaged items, the People's Committee of Mon Son commune has installed barriers and placed signs restricting motor vehicles at both ends of the bridge to ensure safety for people and reduce traffic speed while waiting for repairs. |
According to Mr. Vi Van Quy - Head of the Economic Infrastructure Department of Con Cuong district, "Pha Lai suspension bridge is assigned to the commune to directly exploit and carry out regular maintenance and repair. With the current state of damage and degradation, Pha Lai suspension bridge needs about 4 billion VND to repair and restore. This cost is beyond the district's capacity." |

In Nghe An province, there are 68 suspension bridges, of which Con Cuong district has the most with 17 bridges. Through a general inspection by the Department of Transport in September 2019, there were more than 30 suspension bridges with "problems" such as: the floor surface was shifted or damaged; rusted, the welds were loose; the screws were falling off; the railings were broken; the main cables were dry; there were no height-restricting barriers, signs prohibiting the weight of the bridge, etc.
