May 5, 2012 16:24

(Baonghean.vn)-Faced with the situation of extreme heat and severe drought on crops, this afternoon, May 5, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An held a conference to discuss measures to overcome drought for the 2012 Winter-Spring crop production.

In April, the total average rainfall in Nghe An province was lower than the average rainfall of many years. The prolonged heat in the past few days has caused the water level in reservoirs and streams in the area to drop sharply, especially in over 600 dams managed by localities, the water level is now only 40-60% of the design capacity. The whole province has over 30 thousand hectares of crops of all kinds suffering from drought, of which nearly 14 thousand hectares are severely drought. The drought area is most concentrated in the midland and mountainous districts, small dams, canal ends and highlands.

According to the assessment, if there is still no rain in the coming days, drought will occur on a large scale, the area of rice in bloom will be short of water, increasing rapidly, many areas will not only lack water for production but also lack water for daily life. To prevent drought, contributing to ensuring the productivity of winter-spring crops, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Nghe An directed localities and units to focus on propaganda for people to use water economically; organize rotational irrigation; dredge irrigation canals; take advantage of all water sources and equipped machinery to fight drought, prioritize irrigation for areas of blooming rice, green rice to ensure the productivity and output of spring rice./.
