Unexpected joy

As reported by Nghe An Newspaper: On August 26, Ms. Pham Thi Soa, 36 years old, in Hamlet 1, Hanh Lam Commune, Thanh Chuong District, was hospitalized and gave birth for the third time at Thanh Chuong District General Hospital. After giving birth, Ms. Soa unfortunately suffered an obstetric complication of acute blood loss due to uterine atony hemorrhage, her life was seriously threatened.

The hospital decided to perform a hysterectomy to save the mother, Pham Thi Soa. At that time, Soa had lost a lot of blood. Her blood type was O. The hospital's blood bank only had 6/11 units of blood left. Thanh Chuong District General Hospital mobilized 3 medical staff to donate blood for emergency treatment. They were Nguyen Trong Linh, Nguyen Viet Thang and Nguyen Van Thong.

Thanks to the “lifeblood” donated by the medical staff, the surgery was successful. By the morning of September 7, the mother had recovered, “mother and child are safe” and was discharged from the hospital.

In response to the noble gesture of the medical staff at Thanh Chuong District General Hospital, on September 12, Nghe An Department of Health issued Decision No. 1082/QD-SYT to award certificates of merit to the head of the surgical team, Dr. Nguyen Hai Linh, and 3 medical staff who donated blood to save the life of a postpartum woman suffering from postpartum hemorrhage.

On the afternoon of September 13, Pharmacist Hoang Van Hao - Acting Director of Nghe An Department of Health went to Thanh Chuong General Hospital to present certificates of merit to the above 4 individuals; and presented congratulatory gifts from Nghe An Department of Health worth 1 million VND to Ms. Pham Thi Soa's family.

Receiving the certificate of merit from the Nghe An Department of Health, Dr. Nguyen Viet Thang was very surprised and happy. Dr. Thang shared: "I received a phone call from the hospital's testing department that blood was needed to save the pregnant woman Soa at nearly 7:00 p.m. on July 26. That day, I was off duty and was preparing to eat. About 5 minutes later, I and 2 other hospital staff members arrived and donated blood. Each person donated 1 unit of blood.

In my heart, I still think this is a normal thing to do because any doctor at Thanh Chuong District General Hospital is willing to share his life to save the sick. We always keep in mind the teachings of Hai Thuong Lan Ong: The way of medicine is a humane art whose duty is to preserve people's lives. So we must worry about everyone's worries first, and be happy after our own happiness. Only take saving people as our duty, no need to count the benefits or merits."

4 staff of Thanh Chuong General Hospital were awarded certificates of merit by Nghe An Department of Health including:

Meritorious Doctor Nguyen Hai Linh, Hospital Director - Head of the emergency surgery team for obstetrician Pham Thi Soa

DoctorNguyen Viet Thang, born in 1991, Faculty of Oriental Medicine (Has donated blood twice to save patients)

Mr. Nguyen Van Thong, born in 1990, Administrative Organization Department (Has donated blood 3 times to save patients)

Mr. Nguyen Trong Linh, born in 1988, Finance and Accounting Department (Has donated blood 3 times to save patients)

Live blood bank

Indeed, the story of doctors and nurses of Thanh Chuong General Hospital donating blood to save patients has become a regular occurrence. In a mountainous district far from the Provincial Hematology and Blood Transfusion Center, it is very difficult for Thanh Chuong General Hospital to proactively source blood to save people. Therefore, for the past 3 years, the hospital has established a live blood bank right at the unit. All doctors and nurses participate in this live blood bank.

Doctor Nguyen Thinh Khuyen - Deputy Director of Thanh Chuong District General Hospital said: "In 2015 - 2016, more than 80 units of blood were donated by staff, providing timely emergency care for seriously ill patients being treated at the hospital. More than anyone else, we understand the importance of sharing life, regardless of position or age, as long as they are healthy enough, hospital doctors and nurses all carry out this meaningful activity."

Since the beginning of the year, at Thanh Chuong General Hospital, there have been many touching stories about doctors donating blood in emergency situations: On February 13, 2017, Dr. Cuong and Dr. Xo donated blood to save Ms. Le Thi Hong, 76 years old, in village 3, Thanh Thuy commune, who had a perforated stomach; On April 3, 5 hospital staff donated blood to save pregnant woman Phan Thi Vinh, 35 years old, in Phuong Hoang hamlet, Thanh Tung commune, who had severe hemorrhage.

Currently, the Blood Bank of Thanh Chuong General Hospital is no longer limited to the staff in the hospital but has expanded with the participation of many officials and party members in the district. For example, comrade Le Dinh Thanh - Vice Chairman of Thanh Chuong District People's Committee - a member of the Blood Bank has also volunteered to donate blood twice to save patients.

Speaking at the award ceremony for 4 medical staff of Thanh Chuong District General Hospital, Pharmacist Hoang Van Hao - Acting Director of the Department of Health stated: Although science and technology have developed a lot, there is still no invention of any substance that can replace human blood. Nghe An currently has a Blood Transfusion Hematology Center, however, the amount of blood and blood products to ensure the work of saving people is still very lacking.

In order to have enough blood to save patients, in the past 3 years, almost all hospitals in the province have established their own Blood Bank. There, doctors and nurses are always enthusiastic and ready to give blood to emergency patients. There have been many stories of sharing the noble life.

The public still remembers the story of 3 doctors from the Friendship General Hospital who were assigned to provide professional support to the Xieng Khouang Provincial General Hospital (Laos) and donated blood to save the life of a Laotian woman suffering from uterine atony and postpartum hemorrhage; or the story of 10 doctors from Nghe An Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital donating blood to save the pregnant woman Nguyen Thi Kim Dung suffering from hemorrhage and signs of blood clotting disorder on New Year's Eve and to save 9-year-old Ho Thi My Duyen on the 3rd day of Tet... Every year, on the "Pink Drops, White Blouse" festival, there are always over 2,000 medical staff from 35 provincial medical units participating in blood donation.

Nghe An Health Sector has been trying to expand the Live Blood Banks - the source of life to save patients. Along with the movement of Bowl of Love Porridge, Live Blood Banks are the specific "pills" to soothe the pain of patients.
