Nghe An with solutions to improve the quality of commercial cattle herds

(Baonghean.vn) - On the morning of October 11, the Provincial People's Committee organized a scientific workshop on "Developing beef cattle farming towards commodity production". Attending and chairing the workshop was Mr. Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee.The workshop is an opportunity to gather and connect scientists and managers to Nghe An, helping the locality in socio-economic development.

Also attending the workshop were Dr. Tong Xuan Chinh - Deputy Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry - Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development; Dr. Le Van Thong - Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Large Livestock Association; Prof. Dr. Vu Chi Cuong - Institute of Animal Husbandry, Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development... Leaders of the departments: Science - Technology; Agriculture - Rural Development.

Overview of the workshop

Implementing Resolution 02 of the Standing Committee of Nghe An Provincial Party Committee on "Developing large livestock farming in the period 2006 - 2015", cattle farming in general and commercial cattle farming in particular in the province have made significant progress in both quantity and quality.

The whole province currently has over 727,000 buffaloes and cows, with the following breeds: local yellow cows, U-head-axe cows, Zebu crossbred cows, dairy cows, and meat crossbred cows. The distribution structure in terms of quantity and quality varies by region.

Cattle raising practices in Nghe An are mainly traditional and experienced; the common household farming scale is 1-2 cows/household. The number of farms is not large, mainly concentrated in lowland mountainous areas; some households in highland areas still practice free-range grazing.

Veterinary work, disease prevention, slaughter control and hygiene inspection basically meet requirements.

Comrade Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee chaired the workshop.

However, the issue that needs attention is that although Nghe An has the largest herd of buffalo and cattle in the country, the output of fresh meat for slaughter ranks 5th in the country, while the potential for developing the province's cattle herd is high and the consumption market is favorable. Therefore, improving the quality of buffalo and cattle herds is the goal in the coming period.

At this workshop, members listened to presentations and proposals to improve the quality of Nghe An's cattle herd by scientists in the domestic livestock industry: Current status of commercial beef cattle farming in ASEAN countries, TPP participating countries and forecasts for commercial beef cattle farming in Vietnam; Current status and solutions for commercial beef cattle farming in Nghe An; Application of scientific and technological advances in crossbreeding and selection to improve productivity and quality of cattle herds in Nghe An in the period of 2016 - 2020 and the following years.

The Australian cattle farm of Kieu Phuong Company Limited (Tan Ky) is being encouraged to develop by scientists in the livestock industry in Nghe An.

The presentations provided solutions to improve and enhance the quality of beef cattle breeds in Nghe An; oriented and proposed some models for developing commercial beef cattle farming, period 2016 - 2020 and following years;

At the same time, ensuring nutrition and food for beef cattle is a matter of concern. At the same time, it is necessary to strengthen veterinary work, prevent diseases in cattle herds; apply scientific and technological advances in diagnosis, disease prevention, and environmental treatment to serve commercial cattle farming...

The local yellow cattle breed is small in stature, but has delicious meat quality and is commonly raised in households.

The goal of Nghe An in the period of 2016 - 2020 is to develop sustainable beef cattle farming in the province, to create livelihoods, security and increase income for people, adapt to climate change, and contribute to sustainable poverty reduction. Apply technical advances in livestock farming, innovate technological processes, to shift from extensive, exploitative farming to intensive farming.

Speaking at the workshop, comrade Dinh Viet Hong - Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee directed: The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to soon complete the project to develop commercial cattle breeding in the period of 2016 - 2020 and the Department of Science and Technology to deploy models of livestock development applying science and technology, updating science and technology for farmers.
