(Baonghean) -In Mon Son commune (Con Cuong), Mr. Vi Trung Doan (52 years old, living in Thai Hoa village) is often called "The Khen Be Artist" by the villagers. Because for him, the Khen Be is a friend of his age to confide in, and also a bridge to help him bring the young people in the village back to the musical identity of the Thai people.

The Khen be has been a passion of the boy Doan since he was a child. At the age of fifteen, he was already proficient in playing the Khen be made by his grandfather. At that time, the Khen be almost became an "inseparable" object, from herding buffaloes, hoeing fields, going up passes, down streams to festivals, he never forgot to bring the Khen with him. His Khen sound was always listened to by everyone in the village, because it had something very unique, sometimes strong like a great waterfall, sometimes gentle and lingering like the water of the Giang River in his hometown.

When the war spread, a young Thai man with a strong name, Vi Trung Doan, enlisted in the army. During the fierce years in the South Central battlefield, he always missed his family and homeland, especially the sound of the panpipe. When he returned, relatives, friends and villagers came to congratulate him. He responded to everyone's feelings, holding the panpipe and blowing a deep, passionate melody, expressing the deep feelings of a son who had been away from home for a long time, also a message that despite the fierce war, the "soul" of the homeland always resonates in the soul.

Now, after more than 35 years of being attached to khen ba, Mr. Doan sometimes feels sad and worried about its fate. Because in recent years in his hometown of Muong Qua, its sound along with cultural and artistic activities expressing Thai cultural identity have gradually become scarce.

Fortunately, Mon Son commune promptly established the Folk Song and Traditional Instrument Club to gather people who still preserve traditional folk songs and know how to use musical instruments to preserve and teach them to the next generation. Recently, the Department of Culture organized a class to teach music, folk songs, folk dances and Thai ethnic musical instrument performances in Mon Son commune. Mr. Doan always actively participates in the club's activities, and also teaches the Khen Be in the above class.

He is very happy because in this class there are many young people who want to learn how to play the khene, among them are very talented, quick learners, and quite hard-working. And the greatest joy of Mr. Vi Trung Doan is that his children all follow in their father's footsteps in their passion for the khene. Among them, the eldest brother Vi Van Nin, 28 years old, plays the khene "just as well as his father".
