There are still many emergency surgeries during the holidays
According to records at two central hospitals, Viet Duc and Bach Mai (Hanoi), during the 6-day holiday, the number of emergency surgeries was still very high, mainly due to traffic accidents.
According to Dr. Nguyen Duc Chinh, Deputy Head of the General Planning Department, Viet Duc Hospital (Hanoi), during the holidays, the number of patients coming to the hospital remained high, 140-200 visits per day. Of which, nearly half were due to traffic accidents, in addition to work accidents, domestic accidents, and fights.
On April 29 alone, the total number of visits was 146, of which 61 were traffic accidents. Of these, 37 were head injuries and 4 were due to not wearing a helmet. On April 30, the number of patients increased to 190, with 86 traffic accidents.

According to a doctor at Viet Duc Hospital, normally the hospital performs 30 surgeries a day, but the number is much higher on holidays. For example, on April 30, there were 44 surgeries, of which 27 were major surgeries. On May 1, the number was 49, with 23 major surgeries.
The hospital's Emergency Department currently has two serious cases, one due to a work accident where he fell from a tree, paralyzed the spinal cord, and suffered a spinal injury. In addition, a 32-year-old man from Thai Binh has been hospitalized since the evening of April 28. The patient drank alcohol and crashed his motorbike into another motorbike. According to his family, he was wearing a helmet, but it was a pith helmet, which was not of good quality. The accident resulted in a traumatic brain injury, facial trauma, and bilateral lung contusions, requiring a ventilator.
During the holiday, there were also many hospitalizations due to fights, most of which were alcohol-related. On April 29, there were 7 cases of accidents due to fights admitted to Viet Duc Hospital; on April 30, the number was 10. These were all new cases of severe trauma admitted to the emergency room.

The Emergency Department is no longer overloaded like every year because Bach Mai Hospital still maintains examination tables at the Examination Department and clinical departments. Photo: Nam Phuong. |
At Bach Mai Hospital, Dr. Duong Duc Hung, Head of the General Planning Department, said that during the holidays, the Emergency Department receives an average of 100-130 cases per day. In addition to cases of cardiovascular disease, high blood pressure, and stroke, there are also emergencies due to alcohol poisoning, gastrointestinal bleeding, and acute pancreatitis. Because the examination tables at the Examination Department and all clinical departments are still maintained, the Emergency Department is no longer overloaded.
At the Tropical Hospital, on average, there are dozens of patients admitted every day, with 5-6 cases in the Emergency Department alone. Transferring patients to provincial hospitals is more difficult because patients are worried about not being well cared for on their days off. Therefore, the hospital, which was already crowded with patients, becomes even more crowded. Some patients have cirrhosis and drink a lot of alcohol on their days off, so they have to be admitted to the emergency room.
According to the report of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health, from April 28 to May 2, there were more than 70,000 medical examinations and 41 deaths. Of these, nearly 1,500 were emergency cases due to traffic accidents and more than 300 were due to fighting.
Doctors say that the last day of the holiday is usually the most tiring, with a large number of patients arriving. The reason is that people flock to big cities, traffic density is high, and the risk of accidents increases.
